Our Story So Far
Founded in 1862, FAO Schwarz is one of the oldest and most iconic toy retailers in the world. Frederick August Otto Schwarz dreamed of a marvelous, bountiful emporium full of extraordinary, one-of-a-kind toys from all over the world. His dream became a reality, and as one of America's oldest brands, we have provided this wonder to families for more than 160 years.
The Job
The Toy Soldier serves as the iconic and recognizable face of the FAO Schwarz Flagship Store in Rockefeller Center, and of the FAO brand globally. This role is responsible for embodying the values, spirit, and excellence of the brand while delivering a world-class guest experience. As a key brand ambassador, the Toy Soldier plays a central role in welcoming guests, leading the store’s daily opening ceremony, and representing the brand at in-store events, private parties, and public engagements.
The Toy Soldier is also a prominent presence on social media and other marketing platforms, helping to bring the brand to life through engaging content and storytelling. This position requires a high level of enthusiasm, professionalism, and performance ability, with a focus on creating memorable, joyful experiences for guests of all ages.
This is a part-time position with the ability to work up to 29 hours per week on a consistent basis.
Reporting to: Sales & Experience Manager
What You’ll Do
§ Engage each guest to deliver an outstanding experience throughout their entire visit.
§ Build connections with visitors and passers-by alike, remaining in character at all times and bringing a sense of fun to the day.
§ Act as the personality of the store and build rapport with both children and adults by adapting your style to make them feel welcome.
§ Lead the daily opening ceremony for the store with flair and uniqueness.
§ Act as greeter for the store in all types of weather, ensuring all guests feel welcome as they start their journey in our flagship store.
§ Be an expert in Rockefeller Center and the local NYC area, ready to supply relevant information to guests on demand as store concierge.
§ Participate in filmed or live video content on social media and in online posts in full Toy Soldier persona.
§ Travel for special events with the company or partners on a pre-agreed, as-needed basis.
§ Lead store tours before hours and during hours of operation, including private events and VIP tours.
§ Tailor key talking points to adapt to your audience and deliver key information with a personal flair.
§ Have a robust understanding of the history of the brand and be able to educate guests
§ Display strong product knowledge and be an expert in our experiences and offerings to help guests of all ages find the perfect toy to take to their forever homes.
§ Be the face of the brand at VIP events, birthday parties, corporate events, brand activations and other events and parties as needed, at times serving food, performing magic tricks, dancing on the piano, or as general entertainment.
What You Have
§ Experience in a performance, acting, music, or dance background could be beneficial.
§ Familiarity with a premium or experience-based retailer is a plus.
§ An engaging and theatrical personality that can captivate an audience in all environments and situations.
§ Remain positive and in character for extended periods of time without losing any of your Toy Soldier magic.
§ Capable of lifting up to 25 pounds, and bending, twisting, and standing for long periods of time in all types of weather.
§ Able to be in costume during all types of weather.
